Job Description

We have multiple openings for a Design and Drafting Supervisor. You will work in a team of supervisors managing a design staff with collaboration with scientists, engineers, and top-level technical personnel to provide highly advanced technical and administrative management expertise in mechanical and electrical engineering design. Groups are composed of supervisors, engineering associates, and designers, where you will have a critical role in fostering successful careers creating a positive and inclusive working environment and providing an outstanding and diverse staff to support mission in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED) and the Weapon Technologies and Engineering (WTE) Program.

These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Provide direct administrative supervision of design and drafting staff and other matrixed support including personnel actions and administration of policies and procedures for a work unit. Perform personnel related functions including interview and selection of hires, performance evaluations, ranking, salary recommendations, and promotions.
  • Establish and manage performance required to satisfy programmatic milestones and deliverables and lead corrective actions where necessary. Provide career and technical guidance to the work unit.
  • Exercise independent judgment and discretion in pursuit of division and program technical and administrative mission. Includes frequent decision making using independent judgement to set priorities and work methods.
  • Advise and evaluate staff on the execution of technical work, provide performance feedback, identify staff networking opportunities, provide training and coaching, and facilitate regular career growth and development discussions, including plans and goals. Monitor and influence the work environment to foster employee morale and well-being; recruit, hire, mentor, and retain outstanding technical staff.
  • Manage workforce projection working with programmatic managers to meet staff availability and training needs, using this information to help develop a vision for the group.
  • Develop, prepare, present, and participate in required design reviews, reports, procedures, and other communications in support of technical and administrative assignments.
  • Provide innovative conceptual engineering design and development proposals by preparing or directing initial layouts and checking form, fit, and function. Direct the design of apparatus, equipment, assemblies, facilities, utilities, and systems by interpreting and translating design concepts and layouts for the solution of complex and variable technical problems.
  • Collaborate and participate in the definition of functional requirements, solve complex technical and resource problems, and evaluate alternative design concepts consistent with schedule, cost, and material limitations. Provide technical leadership of the engineering design process and ensure the quality of the drawings produced along with adherence to standards.
  • Maintain close working relationships with group leaders and program management to ensure timely, cost effective execution of supportive design/drafting services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 390.2 level

  • Provide highly advanced technical and related administrative supervisory expertise in the areas of applied engineering technology including planning, design, fabrication, project support, testing, and evaluation where the qualitative and quantitative complexity of the project assignment demands original and innovative problem solutions.
  • Provide division and programmatic representation at meetings, briefings, and other activities both internal and external to the Laboratory.
  • Contribute to the Engineering Directorate and Institutional tasks, such as developing policies and procedures, pursuing contracts with outside contacts, and participating on committees.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology, Associate degree in Technology, a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience providing technical leadership through the effective utilization of people and available resources and knowledge of supervision or significant technical leadership roles.
  • Experience and interpersonal skills to lead/supervise project teams, mentor, negotiate win-win solutions, team building, and provide customer service.
  • Ability to manage emotions in positive ways to communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome setbacks, and defuse conflict.
  • Advanced design skills and thorough knowledge of ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing and its applications, standard drafting practices, and manufacturing processes.
  • Significant experience with design principles, standards, and policies, including experience in maintaining drawing requirements standards, technical project leadership, scheduling, and reporting.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication, feedback, and presentation skills necessary to represent the Division and Program at meetings, briefings, and committee activities both internal and external to the Laboratory and interact with people at all levels.
  • Experience in formal design reviews and technical presentations.
  • Experience using engineering CAD software tools, and Product Lifecycle Management software.

Additional qualifications at the 390.2 level

  • Extensive experience in projecting complete design cycle function time for multidisciplined projects and making independent fundamental decisions regarding variable technical problems, and ability to meet project requirements and deadlines.
  • Extensive experience in the application of highly advanced ASME Y14.5 concepts in defining unusual geometrical requirements and in applying advanced drafting practices and fabrication techniques.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience in administrative supervision, preparation of performance reviews, ranking and salary management, and knowledge of Institutional Policies & Procedures.
  • Experience interacting with and satisfying customer needs in a highly technical setting.
  • Experience in project management including personnel and procurement planning.
  • Experience using PTC Creo and PTC Windchill Product Lifecycle Management software.
  • Experience in design of weapon systems, components, and related diagnostic and testing equipment.
