Job Description

We have an opening for a Business Specialist to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.  You will be a member of the Principal Associate Directorate (PAD) administrative team.  This position is in the National Ignition Facility and Photon Sciences (NIF&PS) PAD.

In this role, you will

  • Assess administrative requirements and deliverables for the Deputy Principal Associate Director (DPAD) for Operations, NIF Director and DPAD for Programs.
  • Plan, execute, and provide oversight on a variety of high level administrative, operational, and organizational requirements and activities for the NIF&PS PAD office.
  • Independently set priorities when committing manager’s time; develop solutions for complex and often confidential and/or sensitive scheduling issues.
  • Research, analyze, interpret, prepare, and assemble information and data from multiple and diverse sources for senior-level individuals, both internal and external to the Laboratory.
  • Independently collect, review, and finalize a variety of sensitive documentation for adherence to policy and to ensure consistency.
  • Research, analyze, establish, and implement internal administrative procedures and systems to enhance efficiency and effectiveness of administrative operations.
  • Represent the DPAD in daily administrative matters, clarifying, coordinating, communicating, and disseminating information on their behalf.
  • Independently assess, interpret, identify solutions, and ensure resolution of tasks and inquiries using knowledge of the area supported; determine and execute appropriate administrative process.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Experience coordinating administrative and operational work activities and multi-faceted internal processes for the work unit and/or functional area.
  • Experience participating in business, operational and/or organizational activities.
  • Experience working on organizational projects with the ability to understand customer needs and interpret and apply relevant policies and procedures; effective leadership and team-building skills.
  • Understanding of basic principles of personnel administration, policies, and procedures and of human resources compliance requirements.
  • Effective analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills necessary to independently advise, resolve, recommend, and approve appropriate actions to implement solutions.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with the shown ability to handle sensitive and confidential issues with tact, discretion, and mature judgment; ability to effectively deal with difficult situations and personnel.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; advanced organizational skills, attention to detail, accuracy, and follow through.
  • Advanced knowledge of computers and associated software including MS Office applications; experience creating and maintaining complex Excel spreadsheets.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with LHIRE, LAPIS, and other LLNL administrative software and platforms.
  • Experience working in a classified environment.

Security Clearance

LLNL is a Department of Energy (DOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Laboratory.  Most positions will require a DOE L or Q clearance (please reference Security Clearance requirement).  If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.
