Job Description

We have an opening for a Biogeochemistry Postdoctoral Researcher to develop and pursue innovative research in the analysis of reaction chemistry and thermodynamics at mineral-water interfaces. You will develop data mining, database development, machine learning, and traditional surface complexation modeling approaches for applications ranging from nuclear waste repository performance assessment to watershed and ecosystem water quality prediction. You will join an interdisciplinary team focused on development process-level understanding of radionuclide and metal biogeochemistry across a number of field research sites. This position is in Environmental Isotopic Signatures group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division. 

In this role you will 

  • Develop and pursue innovative research addressing advanced mineral-water interface biogeochemical modeling.
  • Develop optimization approaches to model sets of geochemical data using a state of the art machine learning and parameter estimation tools
  • Design and implement extrapolation methods to expand mineral-water interface geochemistry across a wide range of elements that span the periodic table.
  • Assist in development of conceptual and numerical approaches to integrating thermodynamics and surface complexation modeling in reactive transport models.
  • Document and publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present results at international conferences, present seminars and/or presentations at technical meetings.
  • Collaborate with other scientists and technical personnel to accomplish research goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Earth Sciences, Chemistry, Nuclear Engineering, Geology, or related field.
  • Experience using data science tools to interrogate datasets (e.g. Python, R, Jupyter Notebook, etc.).
  • Experience in thermodynamic and surface complexation modeling and data fitting codes (e.g. GWB, PHREEQC, CRUNCHFLOW, PEST, etc.).
  • Experience working in an interdisciplinary team of environment scientists.
  • Documented publication record in peer-reviewed literature with experience presenting research results to a large audience.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.

Qualifications We Desire

  •  Experience performing laboratory wet chemistry experiments related to biogeochemistry at interfaces.
  • Experience performing laboratory experiments to quantify biogeochemical processes controlling radionuclide and metal transport behavior
  • Experience working with an interdisciplinary team to develop conceptual and numerical models of reactive transport.
