Job Description

We have an opening for a highly motivated Staff Scientist / Scientific Researcher to conduct research in all aspects of energetic materials formulations, including: energetic polymer composites, mixing, casting, novel methods for any of the aforementioned operations, polymer development, thermal and mechanical properties characterization, and novel formulations for conventional and additively manufactured fabrication processes. You will be an integral member of an interdisciplinary team responsible for conducting and supporting experiments to enable innovative technologies in high explosives manufacture and processing, as well as developing a deeper understanding of explosive chemistry and detonation phenomenon. This position is in the Functional Materials Synthesis and Integration group of the Materials Science Division.

This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

In this role you will 

  • Conduct moderately complex to complex research in the areas of design, synthesis, and characterization of energetic material components and formulations.
  • Participate in the design and development of new explosive formulations for a variety of applications directed by multiple investigators.
  • Independently analyze and resolve formulation problems and establish solutions leading to materials which meet desired scientific specifications or programmatic needs.
  • Perform research guided by multiple primary investigators.
  • Track and maintain careful documentation of experimental results.
  • Communicate research progress to team members through presentations, and internal reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.3 level

  • Provide advanced scientific/technical expertise and guidance in the field of formulation science.
  • Develop and guide advanced focused research programs for various formulation techniques.
  • Represent the organization and the program to both internal and external sponsors to actively promote focused research areas in formulation science.



  • BS, or MS in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials, polymer, pharmaceutical, food, or cosmetic science, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Broad laboratory experience in one of the above fields.
  • Broad understanding of basic materials characterization and synthesis.
  • Experience performing and/or designing experiments and documenting results.
  • Ability to work independently on defined research projects, as well as a member of a team.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff within a collaborative research and development environment at LLNL.
  • Willingness to train and become qualified to handle high explosives.

Additional qualifications at the SES.3 level 

  • PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials, polymer, pharmaceutical, food, or cosmetic science, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Advanced knowledge and significant experience in formulation development.
  • Significant experience conducting research with limited direction.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with a variety of laboratory scale mixing and formulation methods, e.g. blade high-shear, LabRAM, speed-mixer, slurry coating, extrusion and injection loading and experience characterizing material properties such as viscosity, molecular weight, and glass transition temperature.
  • Experience with chemical and physical analytical techniques (i.e., Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Fourier Transform-Infrared, particle size analysis, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area, rheology, mechanical properties testing, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Thermogravimetric Analysis, Scanning Electron Microscopy), and in formulations based research.
  • Experience working with hazardous materials and/or energetic compounds, including pyrotechnics, explosives or propellants, and in processing various polymers from monomer and oligomers.

Security Clearance
