Job Description

We have an opening for a Supervisor/Sr. Supervisor to support the DoDT Programs in the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate.  You will work independently by collaborating with scientists, engineers, and top-level technical personnel to provide advanced technical and management expertise in NIF.  The group is composed of engineering associates and technologists where you will have a critical role in fostering successful careers creating a positive and inclusive working environment and providing an outstanding and diverse staff to meet program needs. In addition to the Supervisor role, you will be expected to maintain a full-time programmatic project role/assignment in the NIF & PS Directorate. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will 

  • Lead, supervise, and provide technical and administrative guidance to group members.  This includes writing performance appraisals, participating in the LSEO division ranking and salary management processes and monitoring performance required to meet programmatic milestones and deliverables, and leading corrective actions where necessary. This also includes making promotion recommendations and addressing disciplinary issues.
  • Apply technical expertise to the development, testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, and operations plans, and perform modifications of complex to highly complex electronic systems.
  • Collaborate with the NIF&PS Directorate leaders to identify and manage the work assignments for the group members, define work objectives, and obtain ongoing performance feedback.
  • Advise and evaluate staff on the execution of technical work, provide performance feedback, identify staff networking opportunities, provide training and coaching, and facilitate regular career growth and development discussions, including plans and goals.
  • Monitor and influence the work environment to foster employee morale and well-being; recruit, hire, mentor, and retain outstanding technical staff.
  • Manage workforce projection working with programmatic managers to meet staff availability and training needs, using this information to help develop a vision for the group.
  • Establishes and/or modifies guidelines, techniques, and procedures, choosing the appropriate work methods.
  • Strategically plan and navigate logistical aspects of electronic installations, refurbishment, and new system delivery.
  • Direct teams and individuals to perform work safely and consistent with program objectives.
  • Manage and verify training compliance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Apply innovative technical expertise to the development, testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, and operations plans, and perform modifications of highly complex electronic systems.

  • Utilize highly advanced supervisory and technical knowledge and experience to lead multiple projects and involved teams.

  • Represent LLNL on issues of high significance.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and previous related experience.
  • Advanced skills and understanding of relevant technologies and processes, to design complex systems and solutions to challenges.
  • Ability and experience needed to assemble and direct teams to complete specific projects or resolve technical problems in a safe and secure manner.
  • Significant experience in and interpersonal skills needed to lead/supervise project teams, mentor, negotiate win-win solutions, team building, and provide customer service.
  • Ability to manage emotions in positive ways to communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome setbacks, and defuse conflict.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication, presentation, and feedback skills in multiple technical areas.

Additional qualifications at the 390.2 level

  • Advanced verbal and written communication, presentation, and feedback skills in multiple technical areas.
  • Extensive experience mentoring others in specific on-the-job training, with highly advanced technical skills specific to assignment, including administrative and technical leadership skills.
  • Highly advanced skills and understanding of relevant technologies and processes, including mechanical and electronics technology theory necessary to design complex systems and solutions to highly complex problems.
  • Highly advanced written and verbal communication, feedback, and presentation skills in multiple technical areas.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Highly organized, reliable, and dependable with an ability to manage/supervise a variety of concurrent activities.
  • Experience in payroll supervision, preparation of performance reviews, ranking and salary management, and knowledge of Engineering Directorate policies and procedures.
  • Experience interacting with and satisfying customer needs in a highly technical setting.

Security Clearance

LLNL is a Department of Energy (DOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Laboratory.  Most positions will require a DOE L or Q clearance (please reference Security Clearance requirement).  If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.
