Job Description

We have an opening for a Manufacturing Engineering Group Leader to lead a multidisciplinary group supporting manufacturing needs across all programs with a focus on LLNL mission specific requirements. You will develop manufacturing processes, execute and manage involved projects, evaluate current and future manufacturing capabilities and lead the maintenance and advancement of manufacturing capabilities across the complex.  This position is in the Materials Engineering Division (MED) within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will 

  • Provide technical and administrative leadership and direction to group members, write performance appraisals, and participate in the MED division ranking and salary management processes.
  • Provide leadership for day-to-day operations of the manufacturing complex involving multiple functions including facilities, safety and security, work controls (ITS), work orders and task routing, developing, implementing, and improving processes to increase efficiencies within the organization.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and technical guidance to identify critical gaps in manufacturing capabilities, evaluating, and implementing solutions.
  • Interact with IT and provide guidance to ensure proper support for various work centers including software procurement, software applications, equipment installations, and related operations.
  • Partner with programs and customer base to identify technical capability and hardware needs to ensure efficient, high quality results.
  • Manage projects within the work center including strategies and implementation for capital equipment procurement and installations, technology development, and workflow planning.
  • Lead establishment of project milestones, cost estimating and budget planning for multiple manufacturing functions, ensuring work is performed in accordance with institutional safety and security regulations and protocols.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.4 level

  • Provide solutions to highly unusual, complex, and/or sensitive issues and problems where the solution path is not known ahead of time.
  • Apply expert knowledge and ingenuity to develop and apply cutting-edge principles, theories, concepts, and technologies to lead highly complex project planning and execution including leading multi-disciplinary teams in successful project execution.
  • Responsible for high level goal setting, strategic planning efforts, and succession planning on long range goals, working with group leaders and senior management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience leading teams involved with highly advanced and modern manufacturing practices and applications including hands-on execution.
  • Significant engineering knowledge and experience required to establish objectives, identify gaps, and select methods and techniques for obtaining solutions independently, under consultative direction.
  • Significant understanding of facility operations within an R&D manufacturing environment, including assessment of program needs and requirements, requiring cross functional operational partnerships and an understanding of ISO 9001.
  • Significant experience and ability in full life cycle project management of highly complex manufacturing projects including strategic planning, setting milestones, monitoring costs and budgets, and managing resourcing to multi-faceted projects.
  • Significant experience assessing risk for projects involving high hazards that may result in a high consequence of error.
  • Significant verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present/explain technical knowledge, and provide advice to management.

Additional qualifications at the SEL.4 level

  • Extensive experience leading innovative workforce development activities and policy initiatives at the institutional level.
  • Extensive leadership experience advancing state-of-art technologies related to multi-faceted manufacturing projects.
  • Experience and expert ability to champion, lead and develop innovative cutting-edge principles, theories, and concepts.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
  • Experience working in a classified environment including understanding of LLNL and NNSA mission space specifically for WCI activities.
