Job Description

We have an opening for an ISG Ramrod to support the Initiation Systems Group (ISG) conducting dynamic experiments in the High Explosives Applications Facility (HEAF). You will be responsible for the technical direction and execution of experiments by interacting with Principal Investigators and Firing Operators and ensuring necessary work instructions are completed, maintained, and used as required to conduct safe, secure, effective, and efficient operations of firing activities. In addition, you will prepare packages of post-experiment materials with pertinent data analysis and interpretation. This position is in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), supporting the Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) Principal Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will 

  • Provide technical direction for execution of various complex experiments to include explosives, high voltage, lasers, and high speed diagnostics, ensuring the effective collection of mission-essential data.
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee the fabrication, purchasing (including high explosives), hardware assembly, and diagnostic placement for experiments at HEAF.
  • Apply innovative technical expertise to experiment scheduling, personnel coordination, diagnostic implementation, and energetic material target assembly for testing in enclosed firing tanks at HEAF.
  • Develop and maintain accurate and detailed technical records of experimental design and data to ensure results are properly annotated and organized for reports.
  • Collaborate with scientists and engineers in the implementation of safety guidelines for experimental operations by applying technical knowledge and skills in a variety of safety disciplines and ensuring design reviews are conducted on novel experiments in compliance with the HEAF Facility Safety Document.
  • Interact with internal customers, working under general direction to design and implement solutions for complex experimental designs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 339.2 level

  • Utilize independent judgment to provide highly advanced technical support to prioritize and schedule highly complex experiments with long lead-times, and deconflict scope, which may involve parallel tasks with unclear priorities.
  • Represent the organization by providing input on technical issues of high significance and at external meetings and/or conferences.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of engineering design and engineering drawings, including geometric tolerancing and dimensioning, high-speed diagnostics and knowledge of machining processes, mechanical fabrication and assembly, materials properties and manufacturing methods.
  • Significant experience managing projects and experiments with a high consequence of error with regard to safety.
  • Significant experience functioning in multidisciplinary teams conducting experimental studies.
  • Significant experience identifying and recommending solutions to complex technical problems by evaluating readily identifiable factors using standard methodologies.
  • Experience in collection, analysis, and documentation of scientific data and/or results.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
  • Ability to become a qualified Explosives Handler.

Additional qualifications at the 339.2 level

  • Extensive experience in identifying and analyzing hazards and developing and implementing effective controls for unique experimental activities.
  • Highly advanced knowledge of engineering design and engineering drawings, including geometric tolerancing and dimensioning, high-speed diagnostics and knowledge of machining processes, mechanical fabrication and assembly, materials properties and manufacturing methods.
  • Highly advanced knowledge and understanding of energetic materials - including understanding behavior under extreme loading, including shock, impact, and heating environments.
  • Experience identifying and recommending solutions to highly complex technical problems by evaluating largely identifiable factors using innovative methodologies.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Knowledge of the Primary Nuclear Design experimental program at multiple locations.
  • Knowledge of LLNL policies and procedures and ES&H requirements, and DOE regulations, national codes and standards, and administrative relationships or ability to work in highly regulated environment.
