Job Description

We have an opening for an Applied Physicist/Engineer with an emphasis on accelerator technology. You will execute a variety of complex accelerator-based experiments with a focus on design, optics, diagnostics, simulations, induction, and other technically challenging problems. You will travel as necessary to interact with sponsors and customers. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED), within the Engineering Directorate

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Assess accelerator designs and diagnostics, provide analysis and solutions to complex problems assigned.
  • Serve on a multidisciplinary team to assist in the design and testing of accelerator-based experiments.
  • Prepare regular progress reports, written analyses and verbal briefings that capture and communicate research results to team lead.
  • Maintain an awareness of technical literature in assigned areas.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars, and/or technical meetings.
  • Travel as necessary to interact with collaborators, sponsors and customers and conduct experiments.
  • Adhere to the highest standards of personal and facility safety in performing tests and experiments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.2 level

  • Under guidance, develop and assess accelerator designs and diagnostics, provide advanced analysis and solution to complex problems assigned.
  • Serve as the primary contact of a multidisciplinary team regarding experimental analysis data and analysis.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience with and knowledge of accelerator systems or related field such as diagnostics, pulsed power, vacuum engineering, etc.
  • Ability to exhibit self-motivation and initiative in addressing challenging problems.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication and presentation skills necessary to author technical and scientific reports, publications, invited papers, and to deliver scientific presentations and provide advice to management.

Additional qualifications at the SES.2 level

  • Broad experience leading research in relevant areas of physics and engineering, and experience working effectively and independently in a multidisciplinary, team-oriented, research environment.  
  • Knowledge in accelerator physics, diagnostics, or related field to derive solutions to complex problems through technical work.
  • Ability to work independently, communicate effectively to large multi-lab audiences, management, and write proficiently to inform collaborators and non-technical individuals.

Qualifications We Desire

  • PhD degree in physics, engineering, or a related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience in analysis of accelerator experiments and beam diagnostics.
  • Experience simulating accelerator performance.
