Job Description

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in the field of synthetic biology by conducting research for containment of genetically engineered bacteria. You will work with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers who are passionate about achieving success while solving some of nation’s greatest challenges. This position is in the Systems and Synthetic Biology group in the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division.

In this role you will

  • Conduct research in the areas of low-dimensional materials and devide fabrication.
  • Design, implement, and analyze experiments for the creation and integration of novel nanostructures in functional material systems.
  • Contribute to and actively participate in the conception and execution of research to address defined problems.
  • Organize, analyze, and present data from research at seminars, technical meetings, national and international conferences.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals.
  • Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment both at LLNL and in other national laboratories and universities to accomplish research goals.
  • Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics or related field, with emphasis on low-dimensional materials.
  • Experience in synthesis and characterization of low-dimensional structures such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, metal chalcogenides, and  related nanostructures.
  • Experience with integrating nanostructures into functional devices by various micro/nanofabrication techniques.
  • Experience with characterizing the electronic and/or electrochemical performance of nanostructured materials.
  • Experience with thin-film deposition techniques such as thermal chemical vapor deposition, physical vapor deposition, and atomic layer deposition.
  • Ability to understand and analyze performed experiments.
  • Proficient experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with detailed metrology such as Raman, PL, TGA, SEM, TEM, XPS, XRD, SAXS/WAXS.
  • Experience with methods of exploiting material interfaces and surface chemistry toward sensing or energy storage applications.
  • Familiarity with additive manufacturing techniques such as direct-ink writing or two-photon polymerization.
