Shortly thereafter, Gartside was hired as a nuclear reactor shift worker and continued to progress into supervisory positions at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). He retired from LLNL as a division leader in the Plant Engineering Maintenance and Operations Department in 1991.

He is survived by his sister, Beverly Jane (Gartside) Hollobaugh of Beverly Hills, Florida and her husband, Mark. Preceding him in death were his parents, Elmore and Mable Gartside; sister, Elaine Gartside Murdock; twin brother, Duane Gartside and sister, Gloria Gartside Shockley.
