Stanley Joe Smith

Stanley (Stan) Joe Smith died Dec. 17. He was 62.

Smith was born Sept. 6, 1954, in Ada, Oklahoma to J.L. and J.M. Smith. The family came to California when Smith was 2 years old. He attended Oakley School from grades K-8, moving on to Liberty High School in Brentwood. At Liberty, he played varsity golf, basketball and baseball. A high school golf trip to the Pebble Beach Pro Am inspired a love for golf. He played at Diablo Valley College and almost every Saturday at Las Positas Golf Course. Many of his strongest friendships were developed on the golf course.

Smith married his high school love, Karey Evenson. They were the proud parents of twins, Kristi and Justin. He finished his degree at Golden Gate University after beginning a career at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where he advanced from drafter to superintendent over a distinguished 40-year career, retiring in April 2016.

Beyond golf, his interests included reading, firearms, Sharks hockey and guitar. He will be missed by his Sharks buddies, golf buddies and all who worked with him.

He is survived by his wife, Karey of Livermore; his son, Justin (wife Natalie), and their children, Carter and Lane of Woodland; his daughter, Kristi Gilmore (husband Joey), and their children, Jaxson, Taylor and Tanner of Oakley; his parents, Joe L. and Joyce M. Smith of PML-Groveland; his sister, Janet Hueber (husband Brad) of Clayton; his sister ,Stacye Burns (husband Gar), and their son, A.J. of Visalia.

A memorial service was held.
