Patrick Owen Egan

Patrick Owen Egan of Livermore died Dec. 27. He was 69.

Egan was born July 4, 1947, in New York City to Irish immigrants William and Teresa Egan. A promising student from the start, Egan attended St. Sebastian School, Regis High School and Fordham University where he graduated as a Phi Beta Kappa Society member. He later received a doctorate in physics from Yale University. After marrying his beloved wife Margaret “Peggy,” his academic research took him overseas to Heidelberg University in Germany where he completed his post-graduate work. His work in the field of physics took him to Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and eventually Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

“What stood out most about Pat was his insistence on technical integrity,” said Mike Dunning, WCI principal deputy for Weapons and Complex Integration. “He always applied his critical technical eye to constructively challenge everything. He lived and experienced something we frequently talk about: having multiple careers and never leaving LLNL. Pat had a career as an experimentalist in LLNL’s underground test program, and then had a career as a designer focused on improving our understanding of material property issues related to primary performance, and then a career as an analyst advancing our understanding of foreign weapons programs. Pat retired a few short years ago but remained a strong contributor and mentor in retirement. We will miss Pat’s contributions and overt attention to technical integrity, but much more his friendship, passion and sense of humor.”

He was a loving father of three and participated in many of his children’s pastimes as a soccer referee, a little league umpire and a swimming official. He was active in his community and served on both the board of the Granada Woods Neighborhood Association and the Livermore Human Services Commission. A true renaissance man, Egan was a voracious reader, a gourmet cook, a sailor and a lover of all music, especially opera. For the past decade, Egan has been a loving and devoted caregiver to his wife in her struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Egan is survived by his wife, Peggy, his sons, Michael (wife Andrea) Egan and Peter Egan, his daughter, Jane Wrightson (husband Brian) and grandson, Donovan.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan.4, at Callaghan Mortuary, 3833 East Ave. in Livermore with graveside service immediately following. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, www.alz.org/donate.
