Norris P. Smith

Norris P. Smith of Wallingford, Connecticut died Feb. 5. He was 84.

Smith, a retired Foreign Service officer, attended Deep Springs College, Cornell and Harvard. He served in the Air Force in Korea before joining the Foreign Service. Posts included Laos, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Japan and China.

Smith worked for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory after retiring from the Foreign Service. He also wrote a book on supercomputers and founded and edited a magazine on the same topic. Smith was married to Mary Jane Ste-Marie from 1962 to 1985. They had four children and one granddaughter. Smith married Martha Hanen in 1998. In 2005, they moved to a retirement community where Smith founded a group called "The Writers' Circle." A memorial service was held in Wallingford.
