Luster Knight

Luster Knight, a former LLNL firefighter, died Oct. 24, after a year of battling lymphoma. He was 59.

Knight’s 41-year career as a firefighter began in 1966 when he volunteered at the Camp Parks Job Corps Center in Dublin. In the summer of 1968, Knight went to work for the Sunol Forestry Department. He then he served a firefighter at the Laboratory for the next 10 years.

Knight came to the San Leandro Fire Department in 1978, which joined the Alameda County Fire Department in 1995. He retired in 2007. After retirement, Knight volunteered full time at the Davis Street Family Resource Center.

Many people in San Leandro and the Alameda County Fire Department remember Knight as a man who was committed to helping others in need, especially during the holidays.

Prior to his death, Knight had been elected the chair of the Parks and Recreation Commission in San Leadro, where he had already served as a commissioner for 10 years.

Services were held Oct. 30 in Castro Valley, Calif.
