George Davis

George Davis of Modesto died Aug. 26, due to complications from a recent heart surgery and his long battle with diabetes. He was 74.

Davis was born in Oklahoma on Nov. 23, 1941. He graduated from St. Elizabeth’s in Oakland in 1960. He worked for the retail clerks union, in the grocery business until 1975. He then started his career at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where he worked as a receiving coordinator until he retired in 2004.

On Sept. 10, 1960, he married his high school sweetheart Barbara Schwedhelm. They were married just short of 56 years. Davis was a proud father of four children. He loved his dogs, both past and present. His passion for Bay Area sports was unquestioned; he loved the Oakland A’s, Raiders and the Cal Bears. Fishing was close to his heart. That was where he could take his kids and spend time with them. Both he and his wife enjoyed going bowling, it was a time they could spend with their friends. Davis was of Catholic faith and enjoyed going to church weekly at St. Joseph’s of Modesto.

Davis was a wonderful husband, father and brother. His infectious laugh will be missed.

He is survived by his wife Barbara; siblings Teresa Johnson, Pamela, Virgil and Joanna Davis; children Steven, Charlotte Murphy and Douglas Davis, along with their spouses and his eight grandchildren. He is predeceased by his mother Julia Davis, sisters Maria and Rosemary and his son Richard Davis.

Services were recently held at Callaghan Mortuary, 3833 East Avenue, in Livermore.

Donations may be made in his honor to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford.
