Frederick ‘Ed’ Mills

Frederick “Ed” Mills, a Lab retiree, died July 7 in Manteca, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease and pneumonia. He was 91.

Born in Kent, England, Nov. 7, 1916, Mills was a resident of Tracy.

When he was five years old, he moved with his family to Dunmore, Penn., where he was active in Boy Scouts and played in several bands. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Africa, France and Germany.

In 1952, he moved with his wife and children to Pleasanton, where he lived 56 years. He worked as a surveyor at the Lab for 27 years.

He was an elder and clerk of The Session at the Pleasanton Presbyterian Church and a member of Sons in Retirement. He enjoyed time with his family, camping, music and square dancing and was fond of animals and airplanes.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Arline Mills; daughters, Charline Whitaker, and her husband, David, of Stockton; and Jerry Lynn Rocha, and her husband, Danny, of Tracy; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 20, at 3 p.m. at Centerpointe Presbyterian Church, 3410 Cornerstone Court, Pleasanton. Interment will be in San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, 32053 W. McCabe Road, Gustine.
