John William Dini

John William Dini died June 17, 2026. He was 89.

Dini was born in Cleveland, Ohio on Nov. 14, 1936. Beginning in high school through college, he worked part-time for the Cleveland Supply Company (now PAVCO), a vendor that supplied services to the electroplating industry. He graduated from Fenn College (now Cleveland State University). With his background in electroplating, he joined Battelle in Columbus, Ohio. In 1962 he joined Sandia National Laboratory and spent 18 years there. He published over 150 technical papers and was active in the American Electroplaters Society (AES), serving as president during 1984-85. He was awarded AES’s Scientific Achievement Award in 1985. In 1980, he moved to a management position at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory until his retirement. He published two books, a technical book on materials science and coatings and another on environmental issues. In retirement, he wrote extensively on various environmental issues for online publications.

He is survived by his wife, Anne, of 67 years, and sons Mike, Steve, and Paul.

The family will have a private celebration of life.
