Gary James Devine
Gary James Devine died Jan. 11, 2026. He was 86 years old.
He was born on Feb. 18, 1939, in Oakland, California, to William James Devine and Frances Bernice Estey Devine. He proudly served in the United States Air Force from Jan. 3, 1958, to Jan. 2, 1962, stationed at McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma, Washington. He worked as a personal equipment (P.E.) specialist, responsible for critical safety systems including oxygen equipment, parachutes, and survival gear. He later became a survival school instructor, training aircrews in emergency procedures and life-saving skills. After his military service, he worked at the San Francisco Naval Shipyard (Hunters Point) as a machine tool repairman. He later worked as a machinist at Alameda Naval Air Station in the 1960s. He dedicated 41 years of his professional life to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where he began as a mechanical technician and eventually became a stockpile engineer. During his tenure, he also contributed to the Laser Program, supporting advanced research in laser and fusion technologies.
He is survived by his children, Stacey Devine and Steven Devine; his grandchildren, Tyler Marciel, Cameron Marciel, and Grace Marciel; and his brother, Brian Devine. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Susan; his parents, William and Frances Devine; and his siblings, Billy Devine, Patricia Devine, and Richard Devine.
A Rosary will be held on Thursday, March 12, at 6 p.m. at Callahan’s Mortuary in Livermore. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 14, at 11 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Livermore.
