Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s (LLNL) High Energy Density Science (HEDS) Center, in collaboration with the University of South Florida and University of California, San Diego, is offering a virtual course on the concepts and fundamentals of warm dense matter.

In this course, you will learn from experts in the field of high energy density science as they cover topics on basic physics, hydrodynamics and shock physics, equilibrium and transport properties, simulation and experimental capabilities, diagnostics, and applications of warm dense matter.

“Warm dense matter is at the crossroad of condensed matter physics and plasma physics,” said Frank Graziani, director of the HEDS Center and co-organizer of the course. “It is an intellectually challenging area of science. This course will provide an overview of the theoretical, computational, and experimental concepts. We are fortunate to have a superb group of scientists delivering the lectures.”

The course is open to undergraduate and graduate students (for credit), as well as professionals and the general public (not for credit) interested in exploring the world of warm dense matter. Kicking off the course is a 5-week pre-course bootcamp that begins on August 25, 2025, followed by the 10-week course starting on September 25.

“I'm very excited about this course,” said Federica Coppari, LLNL physicist and co-organizer of the course. “I hope both students and professionals will take full advantage of it. With recorded lectures, it's incredibly convenient to learn at your own pace and fit the material into your schedule seamlessly.”
