Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is globally recognized for its groundbreaking scientific achievements. Yet, beyond its scientific contributions, LLNL has fostered a deep culture of giving, rooted in community connection and generosity.

A recent podcast episode highlights two of the Laboratory’s most impactful initiatives — the HOME Campaign (Helping Others More Effectively) and the Community Gift Program — and the passionate individuals who bring them to life. Listen on Apple or Spotify.

The HOME Campaign is the Lab’s largest charitable giving initiative. This employee-driven program has raised over $82 million in its 50-year history, empowering employees to donate to any 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization of their choice. Donations are matched by LLNL’s managing contractor, Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS), amplifying the impact. Running annually from October to December, the campaign supports over 1,500 charities each year, ranging from local grassroots efforts to nationwide organizations.

Kellie Glaser, program manager for HOME, emphasizes how the campaign fosters a sense of unity among employees.

“The HOME Campaign unites us and helps create communities for those that want to give back,” Glaser said, underscoring how the initiative strengthens the Lab’s culture of generosity and shared purpose.

Complementing the HOME Campaign is LLNL’s Community Gift Program, which focuses on supporting publicly funded California K-12 schools, community colleges, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, and government agencies in the Tri-Valley region. Established in 2010, the program distributes $220,000 annually, with a particular emphasis on advancing STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and STEAM (STEM + arts) education.

Over the years, the program has funded a wide array of initiatives, including robotics and drone programs at local high schools, resources for the Alameda County Foster Parent Association, and exhibits at the Children’s Museum of Stockton. These efforts aim to inspire the next generation of innovators while addressing critical community needs.

As the program evolves, it continues to adapt to the changing needs of the organizations it supports. Trey Johnston, director of Lawrence Livermore’s corporate offices, shared how the program is exploring ways to provide essential tools like laptops and tablets, which have become increasingly vital for modern education.

“It’s a great program, and we hope that it keeps going,” Johnston said, underscoring the Lab’s commitment to ensuring the program remains responsive and impactful.

Through the HOME Campaign and the Community Gift Program, LLNL demonstrates its commitment to building a stronger, more connected community that extends beyond scientific discovery. By empowering employees to support causes they care about and investing in local education, LLNL’s philanthropic efforts embody its dedication to making a meaningful difference.
