Kerwin Falls, a lead contract administrator and subject matter expert for the SASS Group in the Procurement Department at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), brings more than 25 years of dedicated service to the Lab. His career at LLNL has been marked by a commitment to excellence, a passion for community engagement and a dedication to mentoring others.
Falls joined LLNL in May 2000, initially working in the education programs department. There, he coordinated science outreach initiatives, such as the ‘Fun with Science’ program, where he sent scientists to local schools to conduct demonstrations for K-12 students, as well as the ‘Science on Saturday’ program, connecting local educators with Laboratory experts. Early on in his career, he also served as coordinator for the Lab’s summer internship poster symposium, helping young researchers showcase their work. Falls described this period as deeply rewarding, particularly in seeing young minds engage with science and education.
In 2006, Falls transitioned to the Supply Chain Management Department, now known as Procurement. Over the years, he has become a trusted subject matter expert, ensuring that contracts are executed and closed in compliance with regulations. He also served as a mentor and leader within his team, leveraging his dual bachelor’s degrees in business administration and management from the University of Phoenix.
Falls’ journey to LLNL was unconventional. Born in Louisiana and raised in Hayward, California, he initially pursued a career in insurance and mortgage banking before returning to college to complete his degrees. He credits his upbringing and his early professional experiences with shaping his ability to connect with people and adapt to new challenges. Falls emphasizes the importance of broad perspectives in fostering innovation and solving complex problems.
“I always tell my nieces and nephews that you must stay aware of your surroundings in this world,” he said. “Recognize that you can seek knowledge. Go where you can grow and share what you know. Be resourceful and ask, ‘how can I get to my next destination?’”
Outside of work, Falls is passionate about music and golf. He is the founder of The Faith Chorale, a community gospel choir that includes several current and former LLNL employees. He also enjoys golfing regularly and plans to dedicate more time to the sport in retirement. Falls and his wife Teresa, who have been married for 28 years, also look forward to traveling and spending time with family, including their sons and granddaughter.
Reflecting on his career, Falls advises new employees to stay curious, value lifelong learning and prioritize personal growth. He encourages others to critically think, embrace varied viewpoints, and shares the advice his mother gave him: “focus on getting things right rather than being right.”
As Falls prepares to retire, his legacy at LLNL is one of mentorship, community building and a steadfast commitment to excellence.
