Science and Engineering Seminar Series at Las Positas College: Nov. 21
Join Amy Waters and Chad Giacomozzi from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory as they present “Integrated Approaches to Nuclear Threat Reduction” on Thursday, Nov. 21, from 6-7:15 p.m. at Las Positas College.
Now in its 15th year, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)-Las Positas Science Seminar series continues with a seminar on “Integrated Approaches to Nuclear Threat Reduction” presented by Amy Waters, program manager, and Chad Giacomozzi, deputy program manager for LLNL’s Nuclear Threat Reduction program. The event takes place at Las Positas College on Thursday, Nov. 21, from 6-7:15 p.m.
This presentation will explore the critical relationship between science and technology (S&T), policy and operations in the realm of nuclear security and nonproliferation. The speakers will introduce the Department of Energy's national laboratories, with a particular focus on LLNL, and discuss the pivotal role these institutions play in national security. They will also discuss LLNL’s specific contributions to nuclear threat reduction, including nonproliferation, counterterrorism, nuclear forensics and incident response.
Through personal anecdotes and case studies, Waters and Giacomozzi will highlight the importance of integrating technical, policy and operational expertise to address complex global security challenges. Attendees will gain insights into the dynamic interplay between S&T development and its practical application in enhancing national and global security.
The presentation is provided in partnership with LLNL and Las Positas College as part of the 15th Annual Science and Engineering Seminar Series, titled “Theory to Practice: How Science is Done.” The seminar series is designed to enhance the partnership between both Livermore institutions while providing a forum for Laboratory scientists and engineers to share groundbreaking research with the college's scientific community of students, staff and faculty.
In her current role, Waters leads the development of advanced technical solutions for U.S. Government initiatives in nuclear nonproliferation, nuclear counterterrorism, nuclear forensics, emergency response, and consequence management in collaboration with Giacomozzi. With a focus on the intersection of science, technology, policy and operations, Waters has spent more than 20 years at LLNL supporting national security priorities leading programs in aviation security, chemical and biological countermeasures, and assessments of radiological and nuclear detection systems.
Giacomozzi joined LLNL in 2016 as a design physicist, focusing on enhancing U.S. nuclear stockpile stewardship capabilities and applying them to operational nuclear threat reduction.
The seminar is free and open to the public. It will take place in Building 1000, Room 1011, located at 3000 Campus Hill Drive, Livermore.
