Laboratory opens doors to young minds as part of White House 'My Brothers Keeper' initiative

Who: Disadvantaged youth from Oakland and San Francisco will visit Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) for a special "Day at the Lab" as part of the White House initiative, "My Brother’s Keeper."

What: The My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) initiative was designed to address opportunity gaps with disadvantaged and disconnected youth to encourage positive future life and career choices. The goal is to connect young people to mentoring, support networks and the skills they need to find a good job or go to college.

The Department of Energy (DOE) has joined the MBK taskforce and has chosen LLNL to be the first stop in several upcoming MBK events at the national laboratories throughout the summer.

The Lawrence Livermore MBK event will include an interactive Fun with Science presentation, a tour of the National Ignition Facility and a visit to the LLNL Discovery Center. Students also will enjoy a presentation on cyber security, participate in a "Family Feud"-style game and engage with Lab scientists at interactive displays on lasers, additive manufacturing, etc.

When: Friday, June 19, 2015, from 9 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
